I'm not taking it as argumentative.   As for why a grease cup or oil cup works is that it appears the top (which is indented, but not enough to make a candle snuffer practical) looks like it should screw off which would allow you to add grease or oil while the device remained attached to the object being lubricated (via the hole in the exposed threaded end).   Candle snuffers don't usually come with a cover.   The snuffer is usually just a bell like coin (and usually just one layer thick)

G.D. I've never seen a cider mill but I tried making cider out of the apples on my grandmother's farm. It was a disaster. Its no wonder, All I did was chop the apples up and place them in a barrel with water. You get rotten apples that way.  Grin

You missed your calling. Add some yeast, seal it and you will soon have some apple wine. I've made some that way. You need to finely crush the applies into a slurry with the water and add the brewer's yeast. Cover it to keep out germs and wait 6 months. Filter that, add another dose of yeast and wait another year. Filter twice and taste.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I'll keep the recipe in mind if I ever get enough apples again. Great

An oil wick cup would screw in from the bottom or a bearing, a drip cup from the top.
Oil is added to the cup and a wick pushed into it.  The oil simply follows the wick and lubricates the bearing for an extended time.
If the cup is a one piece cup it is then a wick cup.  A drip cup will be able to be unscrewed so that oil can be added to the cup end and not remove it from the machinery.

I tnink it's a oiler should have about 1/4" threads sat on top of a bearing to keep it oiled instead of a oil spout. I have had many when i was junking.
