It helps if we have an idea where it was found. Old home site barn school yard and a general date of site.

Looks sorta like plart of a old lamp but the hole is off center?

Yea you may be right the lead for weight looks like some kind of wire may have ran thru it.

could be a plumbob - like builders use for straight vertical lines

It was found in a former pasture near a creek about 250 yds from any houses but it probably had farm and mill buildings since areas been worked on since the late 1700's. Here's a photo of the other end and a nice bowie and button I found nearby. A sharps cartridge was also within 25yds or so.

HUM well for now I am sticking with plum bob because of the other artifacts sound in the area but Homes idea is also a good possibility

I lean toward the plumb bob camp. My second choice would be a window sash weight, but those are usually longer and more cylindrical.

A Clock Weight.

But again the Hole seems off Center on the Bottom?   Eaaa It would make no difference on the bottom.!!!!! Huh?
