Hi all! This week I dug this seemingly antique padlock in a new site in the woods by where there was once old houses nearby. I'm still cleaning it with electrolysis (12V) but took it out to learn anything about it that you guys can tell me as far as era and possible uses. I won't be able to see a mark for it is too rusty. The body is iron and the shackle seems to be solid brass or copper? I'd like to know what something like this could bring if in fair conditions. I'll clean this one for historical purposes I know nobody could probably buy it in its conditions, I guess. Pretty neat! Thanks for looking.

It looks like a rail road lock to me.

Cleaning it would be a big help....since rail road locks had the railroad name or logo on them.

I agree with BA. Looks like a RR switch lock. They still use ones similar to that one. Eveh if it has no RR name, it might be stamped "Adlake" as they manufactured a large quantity of railroad locks.

RR switch lock

Thanks to both of you. There is in fact a railroad bed crossing through that section of the woods. Question: what was a switch lock used for? And why that name?

I think that mine could be like these ones by Adlake

Switch locks are used to prevent someone from accidentally (or deliberately without authorization) pulling down the levers that cause a train to move from one set of rails to an adjacent set of rails (i.e. switch the train from the main line to a siding  or to an entirely different line headed say north instead of west)

Oh, thank you Ken, that would be really helpful. I also got a number of old keys acquired in a estate sale that I would like some info as well. I'll post them soon.

I checked my Antique Padlock book and it does not have this particular lock in it. Sorry
