This plate was found in cove near the ocean in sand.  The plate has obviously been kicking around in the sand/ocean a very long time.  The metal is not iron according to my metal detector.  The metal is generally black with striations almost like wood. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cast iron when heavily rusted will leave the black marks like what your seeing, and create layers, the heavy color of rust suggests iron for sure but with such heavy corrision and being such a large target Im betting your machine was indicating silver but I have never seen silver rusted that way, in salt water silver sorta melts together into a pile but gold usually is not effected and holds its form.

Yea its iron. William pretty well nailed the reason. You can't rely on your machine to tell you the difference.

Thanks William, I didnt know that cast iron created a layering effect when heavily corroded.  I read that iron may have more of tendency to rust in black color when in seawater.  At first looking at the layering, I thought maybe it was many layers of cladding because the layer depths are so uniform at about 1/32" thick.  Like the Pot Belly Stove or boiler door ideas, other possibilities may include a include a hatch door or a safe door.
