Hi Whiteshark

Now that's a lot of lead and money but depending on how deep she is and how far out to sea would make a huge difference in the salvage operations so the question now is would it be worth while to salvage her?

All the best
Xavier

The SS Sigurd Faulbaums, the famous 创lead-wreck创 was full of lead bars, when torpedoed by the U-9 on 23rd May 1940. She was built by J. Blumer & Co at Sunderland UK. She was first named 创Anglet创, then 创Nordeflinge创. She was captured by the Belgian Navy, when having motor trouble.

Hehe, yes they could be piano wires, they could also be ham sandwiches :Smiley There was a vast amount of varying cargo so it could be a million and one possibilities. Pianos were only a part cargo. We haven't managed to get back there in a while, I've been fairly tied up and the weather isn't looking too good for a few days, big front hitting us on Friday so maybe mid to late next week. Itching to find out what's in them!
In the meantime we managed to haul the Renault Scenic out of the river which has been in there since 2007. Sure it was an insurance job, no bodies in the trunk either. This is the car I found using the Lowrance HDS8 Structure Scan unit...fantastic toy!  Wink
We used one 3 ton lifting bag just for a bit of lift then used a regular Warn winch from a pickup truck to do the rest.

Cheers,

Orcaman

Hi Eddy. You should find a date of that lead. If you manage to get some out don't go selling the stuff for weightbelts and scrap! If the lead is old then it will be more valuable as it is low/nil gamma and is used in various hi-tech stuff and fetches top-dollar! You would send a sample off then probably get around $100/kg I think.
I can find out a bit more from a mate if you are interested.
30m Depth is not too difficult to dive timewise but on a large scale of 1000 tons a hydraulic grab is the way to go. Cameras and lights are fixed to the top of the grab or lights can be hung seperately on a square frame and the grab works through the center of it.
Problem with hydraulics is the length of hose. Most deeper operating units have an electric motor to power the hydraulics just above the grab itself. I'm not sure how you would do in 30 meters, the hose having to be a bit longer too.
I haven't researched this wreck but it's probably quite well known? ...and why hasn't someone jumped in there already?
Let me know, bags are packed  Grin

Cheers,

Orcaman

Hi Orcaman,

Well, I think nobody here is really waiting to lift the cargo. In these regions the kost of bringing up all that is probably more then the price we can get for. Anyway the main reason is that the wreck is in territorrial waters and taking the cargo is not allowed...
A lot of wrecks in our waters are protected.

cheers,
eddy

Hi Xavier. The guys are Power Metal Recyclers and are at Markham Industrial Township near the Kouga Harbour.
041 461 1939. They deal on a larger scale generally but I'm sure they will take smaller amounts, it's just that they are a bit out of town so a bit of a drive!

Cheers,

Orcaman

Hi again Eddy. Typical case of 'if I can't have it then you can't have it'. Everyone fights and so the goods just get left there to rot. Off Gansbaai near Cape Town lies the wreck of the Brederoode found by a good friend Andre Hartman, lawyers, partners, squabbling etc and now 12-13 years down the line there is still about R400m worth of Ming porcelain just lying there untouched and untouchable! Politics!
Best way is to approach the country from where the wreck was registered then let them take up the fight with your government/historical department. They have more clout.

Must run,

Later

Orcaman
