yeah picture must not be clear. it is not basalt of any form. it has gold colored  spears(?) all through it. and the test you directed me to will not always be proof positive. i will try again with pictures. try to zoom in

Unfortunately there's a point where you need to get a professional evaluation--something that even Geoffrey Notkin and Steve Arnold of Meteorite Men have to do.   The pictures and the tests are good for weeding out "meteorwrongs", but when push comes to shove it takes a hands on laboratory assessment to know for sure in most cases.

I am no expert on meteorites or basalt but it does look like basalt to me.

i tend to agree .. the 'gold spikes' are most likely "fools gold" otherwise known as iron pyrite which has crystallized in a basalt rock formation. plus i cannot see much smoothing on the surface of your rock where it should be almost turned to glass from entry into our atmosphere.

like BA said .. if you feel its definitely a meteorite i would go and get it professionally evaluated .. if it turns out it is a meteorite it may be worth quite a bit to the right buyer.

One thing I will mention here is that pyrites will explode when heated since they absorb water. Even in space, there would be water in the pyrites and they'd not survive the trip to earth. If those are pyrites, that's not likely to be a meteorite.

By the way, I don't mean a dynamite like explosion, just one that causes steam to outgas and make the pyrites crumble. There's no danger in heating it up which is often done as a test for whether or not an item contains both gold and pyrites. The gold melts and the pyrites become crumbly.

Doesn't look like any of the meteorites I've ever seen. There's no sign it has been super heated from entry into the atmosphere, and no impact mark.  I would say... its a rock! Wink

Looks like Metamorphic shale with quartzite and pyrite inclusions. Is the black part softer than the rest? If it is than that is what it is.
