The photos didn't work right, so I am trying it again.

Hey everyone,

A month ago in my backyard I found a button that i am assuming is a military button.

It's got an eagle on an anchor.  it's looking to the left.  There are stars going around the outside of the button.  i think there are 13, but I don't remember.  I am at work now and don't have it on me.  There's also 3 cannonballs stacked under the anchor.  The background of the button has horizontal lines on it.  The back of the button has one round opening for attaching it to fabric.  The back is very corroded/rusted, so I can't see any maker info.

I've seen very similar buttons, however, most have a diagonal line at the top of the anchor, and mine is a vertical line.  So buttons I've seen look like l--/---} and mine looks like l--l---}

Any thoughts?

Luke

Karl,  Thanks for the link.  That button on that site is close, but not exact.  the eagle is looking the wrong way on it plus it has that angled piece on the anchor and not a straight one like mine has.

The fact that the stock (cross-piece) on your anchor is straight not angled is the one thing that keeps me from saying it is a US Navy button.   I can live with the eagle looking left.  I've seen examples for both right and left facing eagles for both the Army and the Navy.   But I have not seen an example with a straight stock yet-----
hold your horses-----I wrote that last bit a little too soon.   Look at what I just found at timepassagesnostalgia.com.......Check out the two buttons at the middle of the bottom row.

Ahhhh....If I am seeing the write image, then Yes!  That is my button.  Now I just need to figure out an age on it.  At least this helps me get closer to my answer!

Thanks for the help BA!

Interesting find this weekend.  about a foot from where I found the button, I found a butter knife.  It's got O.C. for the makers mark, but it also has U.S. etched in the handle.

I knoiw this is an old post but to me looks like an old naval button, possibly merchant marine. Sometimes they used to change the faceing of the eagle head when senior commands were changed at the Washington level.
