Go Up Go Down

A number of years, ago, a friend from Melbourne, FL gave me this coin and he said that the person that he bought it from said that is was from Spanish treasure. Can anyone help me identify what it is or authenticate it for me? It weighs 18.5 grams and measures approx. 1 1/2 by 1 1/2"

Looks like a Reale.

Coming from that location it's probably from one of the Fisher Wreck sites.

Mint marks will tell.

Something don't look right about that reale but can't put my finger on what it is right now. Google the word reale and hit images that should give you several pages of old reale's to help match it up.

Cobs are cut coins.

Edges look a bit bubbly like cast.

Ocean Ware would have rounded up the cut edges I would think.

Just a thought.

Swainie, I'm no expert and it will take an expert to tell the difference between a cast reproduction and the real thing but I think I see a bubble on one surface which means it was cast but on the other hand this is not a typical reproduction type coin. The ones I've seen have less wear on them.  I grew up in central Florida and you have always been able to buy cast reproductions of these coins in jewelry and gift shops, they are also common in coin shops  especially along the beach. Some are silver or chrome plated and cast from base metal and some are cast from silver.  I have a silver one that was cast from an Atocha coin. I bought it in Mel Fishers shop He marks them to insure they are not confused with the real thing.  I don't know what the story is but if your friend bought it in a gift shop its probably a reproduction.

Hello Swanie, I'm pretty sure it is an authentic Spanish Reale you got there! Looks like it was recovered from slat water / shipwreck. Nice find!
