Hey Goodbygal2!

I can tell you what you have on one side and that is the Hindu god Ganesh (or Ganesha).  I searched the net for Ganesha coin or medallion and didn't come up with an exact hit.  Normally the Ganesha image is paired on the obverse with the "Ohm" symbol, but in this case yours is not.  Can't guess what this means.

I also found that there were many coins manufactured by the East India company, but I was unable to find a match for yours and of those I saw with a Ganesha on one side, that Ganesha was not sitting on a pad like yours is.  It appears to be in great shape, which makes me think it might be modern and may be from a piece of jewelry - (if it was a modern coin, it would have come up easily by searching "Ganesh coin")  I certainly hope though that you can find someone on this board that may have friends in India - that may be your best bet for finding out.

Best of luck!

Funny thing was it was wrapped and tied in a piece plastic - along with what looked like a flower wrapped and tied in another piece of plastic - a friend thought it may have been some sort of offering ......

What you have there is a Solid silver Ganesha ritual coin, which is used in celebrating on Deepawali (A centuries-old revered tradition of worshipping Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha on Deepawali is followed in millions of families around the world. Diwali is the day of win of good over evil. Every year, a hindu family adds a few Silver coins in the treasure of the house in the Diwali Puja.)  -  festival of light

Its makers mark is the VR in the center on the reverse. as to who the maker is yet .. i'm still looking

oohh thats wierd .. on one side it has the image of Ganesh, yet has the name of Shree (Shree Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity) on the other? with a ganesh coin you usually get the om symbols

is it possible to get a clearer image of the writing/symbols on the coin?
