Hi Everyone,

Newbie here residing in the country of Panama.  Having just purchased a used Pulse Star II metal detector, I was anxious to try it out in some spots here. Anyway, the depth potential of this detector is amazing!  Yesterday, while canvassing an area, I got a reasonably strong signal and after digging over 2 feet, I found what looks to me like a pick axe (see photos). It's about 16 inches long, length-wise.  Has anyone seen anything like it?  Not sure if it colonial Spanish, post Spain Panamanian or more contemporary American (this is close to the former canal zone that the USA owned for 80 years before returning to Panama in 2000). Any feedback would be appreciated!

That is the head of a pick mattock. You'll have to clean it up to have a real guess as to age. You can buy one in the local hardware store right now but they have been in use for centuries. Even as a relic, I wouldn't think it would have much value.

Yep, Soak it in Vinegar if you have any.

Salt water connected by wire to a Wire oF Copper connected by wire would work over time.

Or Just Use Electrolysis.

Farm Implement for sure.

My guess is it's not that old.    Clean it up and Use it.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!  Well, at least I know my machine gets pretty good depth and hopefully soon, I'll find something more interesting in the land of conquistadores, pirates, and Spanish colonies!

It could have been used during the original contruction of the canal. Never know till you get it cleaned off

Sandblast it! I'd do it for ya free but shipping could be costly?  Great

homefire, I'm going to  try the copper wire in salt water you suggest. I've never heard of it but it should work. Copper and Iron make a battery and the current is shorted by the salt water. Sort of auto-electrolysis. I'll let you know how it works....Along the same lines. If you find something you think is gold but are not sure place it in white vinegar with salt and place a copper penny on top of it. Gold and pt wit stay shiny and anything else will corrode.

The newbie's tool looks like it would make a good digger for rocky ground.

Welcome to TH from Kansas, and thanks for sharing your find! During the cutting through to make the canal, there was heavy machinery (for the day), but there were also hundreds of laborers 'grubbing' through the soil/gravel/rock as well. There were probably hundreds on hand digging tools broken or lost as well. My guess is it is one of those. value? as a personal artifact I wouldn't let it go for scrap metal!

Smiley Another way to reduce rust is molasses mixed in water , this creates phosphoric acid , although it does take a while it works  Cool . cheers Mick
