Welcome from Texas. You are off to a good start. Keep up the good work and thanks for the post. Sounds like you have several good answers to what it is and how to deal with it. Thanks everyone else for the good ideas on how to handle it.

Correction to my post about determining if something is gold. I said
"place the object in vinegar and salt and place a copper penny over it and it will corrode if it is not gold. I should have said place an iron nail on top of it and it will corrode." Sorry.  Tongue

Another way to reduce rust is molasses mixed in water , this creates phosphoric acid , although it does take a while it works   . cheers Mick

Cool thanks for the tip did not know this.

GD, I looked through 2 pages of Mattock images you linked to. I only saw one pick-mattock that had a blade / pick length similar to AlbyM's. It is made in India. I'm thinking this is a specialized tool possibly for mining.

AlbyM, A photo of this after you get it cleaned and handled would be nice. gambol

The hand axe/mattock which is in my avatar was hand made for metal detecting.

I didn't need a picture to identify it. I found them later just to show what they looked like. It's a pick/mattock.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys.  It's proving difficult to clean all the rust off.  Naval jelly had no effect on it whatsoever.  The vinegar is proving more affective but still have a ways to go.  I'll get a picture up as soon as it is cleaned up.

Pick up your drill, insert a wire wheel into it and attack the item with great vigor. In short order, you will have a cleaned up pick mattock minus its handle.

If it was used on canal construction it was likely made by oliver iron and steel.

The Oliver Iron & Steel Company of Pittsburgh supplied to the commission about 13,000,000 pounds of such small articles of iron and steel as bolts, rivets, nuts, washers, picks, mattocks and claw bars.  These articles were used in every branch of the construction.
