More specifically, German.   And it honors a medieval/early renaissance person. but I can't see the writing clearly enough to go beyond that.

I can't help either, Jimby.  It makes me think German, also, and of Martin Luther, but I can't make out the writing well enough to back any of that up.  Good luck!  Let us know if you identify it.

This is going to help nail it down somewhat.....the coat of arms on the front is for the city of Mainz in the Rhineland-Palatinate.  So it will be a historical personage from Mainz, Germany.

Do a rubbing of the Scripture.   I can't read it.

I should clarify....the coat of arms with the 2 wheels is the coat of arms of Mainz.   Not sure about the other one with the wanderer/pilgrim/traveler.

This may be a 20th century medal honoring Gutenberg....
Reasoning:
1) Gutenberg is one of the most famous and important people to have lived in Mainz
2) The clothing is approximately correct for what would have been worn while Gutenburg was alive
3) The coat of arms on the right side is definitely the City of Mainz.
4) The coat of arms on the left side appears to be St Christopher
5) St Christopher's of Mainz was Gutenburg's parish church

Another possibility is that it honors Johann Peter Giessel who built the organ there in 1667.  Parts of the organ still exist and it is considered the oldest organ in the Catholic diocese of Mainz.   The church was destroyed during World War 2

One more possibility....it could commemorate the 1925 canonization of St Peter Canisius (and I'm starting to lean more to this conclusion)
