hi this is from an 1870s era military site, i have found metal frames for leather cases, military bags, but have not seen this type, if it is one, which is my guess, but only a guess. it is made from early galvanized steel and the welds are gnarly. any help appreciated, please write with questions. it is about 12 inches high and almost the same wide.

I've found similar items in association with barbed wire at later military training sites.

I'm definitely liking this answer. I wanted to guess that it was some kind of cheap rifle stand, but I'd like to put my money on antique barbed wire spool for sure.
