I found this at an estate sale and thought it was cool. Don't know what it is,maybe a paper weight. Looks like it was used as hammer. Hope someone can tell me.

That's what it is, all right. The top part is missing. That would be shaped like a brass cup which holds the candle and fits on top.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thanks for reply; I would agree that it looks like a base for something, in fact I have a candle stick holder that has a base, on it ,much like this design, however, the knob on the top has knurling on it to prevent it from slipping from your hand, and it weighs 1# 6 oz.. There is not any evidence that anything was ever attached to the top side of this" whatever it is".
If it had a felt bottom on it I would consider it to be an ink blotter, but, instead it has a design on the bottom as though it was supposed to be seen.
  Thanks again.

It reminds me of an old butter press.  Most were made of wood, but I'm sure there could have been some variations on metal . . .

The material on the inside is lead. Everything else is brass.

Ok.  I have to retract the butter press.  I would hope that they would have known the damages of lead when the thing was made.  I'd agree with the seal press of some type, but for what I'd have no earthly clue - it looks huge.
