I'm curious as why you think it is Roman, Saxon, or Medieval.   Just looking at it, I would think that would have been manufactured in either the 19th or 20th century and would have been part of a larger piece of equipment such as a loom.

...Clevis Pin or something similar to tuning pin for a musical instrument like a piano or harpsichord (i.e. something designed to attach a chord under controlled tension to a frame).   As for why I question the age,  it looks like it was machine cast/mass produced to me.   I'm not saying molecat is wrong in his assessment---I'm just curious as to what led him to that particular conclusion rather than from an early part of the "industrial age".  Knowing what he bases his assumptions on could change the entire analysis.
