Hi and thanks for looking. I found this small piece of Jewelry, approx size of a dime today in my driveway. I found a new mode on my Fisher F75 detector that was doing a good job cleaning up my driveway. I notices a scratch that looked like gold. It is heavy for its size. It was black when I dug it, so far I am unable to gently clean it. I havent done a mustard test yet. Any ideas on how to clean and check this without destroying it? This is my first find like this, I usually prospect and dont find silver and gold jewelry. Thanks in advance.

It's probably not gold because gold does not tarnish. Not at all. It's probably lead filled pewter plated gold. That was a common method for increasing the weight of jewelry.

Thanks GD. It sure was bugging me. I may throw it in my pan and see if it cleans up after a few days of being beat by the dirt. I find lead weights all the time on the rio.

I agree, the few gold pieces of jewlry also come up gold. Didnt know if this was something really old or not. Still havent cleaned it up yet.

Looks like it was supposed to be a chile pepper.  It does look lead or pewter from the picture, so I agree with GD that it was either plated or possibly cloissoned (sort of like this pair of earrings)
