Anyone knows what is this medallion or token? It is the same in both sides but upside down. No dates or special ocassion imprinted. The c-cedillo below the C in Francaise is missing, thus it is not a French mint. It is the size of a silver dollar. I found it in an old park in Chicago.

Francaise Republicus is French Republic.  Obviously you find has something to do with France.   Tongue I doubt its worth much of anything but you never know.  Cry It could possibly be a French coin worth only a fraction of a franc.

Thank you for replying. I doubt that it is currency for like I said the little hook under the C letter in Francaise is missing. This c-cedillo appears in every French coin. I'm not as interested in its value than I am in knowing what it is. But I agree it is related to France somehow.

Chicago might be a clue to its origin. In the 1893 World's Fair many exhibitors sold or gave away tokens to do with their country as souvenirs. In another thread, we discussed that very issue to do with another token. Bomber might remember it. It may have been his question.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Well you made me discover many sites I did not previously visit. Yet, no luck. I e-mailed an expert and will see what happens. I think it is nothing relevant, but who knows. It is really intriguing that the C in Francaise has no c-cedillo or the little hook under the letter. Thanks for the help. In the mean time I'll continue Detecting in that same park

Lol The fact that it's missing the letter "C" does not necessarily mean it's not real. it could be a mistake in the way in which it was made and therefore make it quite valuable. Another consideration is the fact that France, is not the only country with french currency. New Caledonia for one which is closer to Australia than Europe. Just thought's though I know nothing about foreign coins.

Thanks for replying. The letter C is not missing, what is missing is the cedillo or the C tail. I know there are French colonies around the world, but the fact that I found this token or whatever it is in a park in Chicago, it is unusual. Somehow, it made it to the windy city  Wink

Yea things turn up in the strangest places, couple of weeks ago I found an 1832 East India Company half Anna just outside Toowoomba Queensland. where there used to be a house. when you consider Australia wasn't settled till 1788. I does make the mind boggle. It's priceless to me because it's the oldest thing ( that I am aware of ) that I have found with my MD. was a tad disappointing when I found it on ebay in good condition for $5.66aud. But as I said, to me it's priceless.

You are right! It is not what it actuially go for, but the meaning and value it has to you. On ebay, you could ask 5.66AU or whatever you feel you should ask and you'll always find a buyer! If I were you, I'll keep it because the thrill of unearthing it after who knows how many years, it's priceless  Wise
