As an aside; I followed the link that you provided and had a peep at the abracadabra talisman. It looks as though the inscription is in Hebrew and that lead me to think the following...........
They say that abracadabra can be used reading it forwards or backwards. Also some students of Kabbalah place great store in certain Hebrew words.Maybe the coin was also used in making decisions.
Flip the coin and abracadabra we do it; other side we don't.

Well it could have been used as a coin I suppose, but with a hole near the edge, it suggests it hung around the neck or something with some type of chain or tether.  The seven stars probably refer to the 7 wandering stars (Saturn, Jupiter,  Mars, The Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon) from the middle ages.  Of course we know them now as planets, but before  telescopes these wandering stars were not fixed like the others.  I'd be surprised if the lettering is Hebraic, but I could be wrong since I'm no expert in Hebrew.

Search "abracadabra pendant" and you will find similar items.

Have no guess as to how old it is.  Here is a link to an old one in the British Museum.

Make up a good story and somebody around LA or Sedona might give you a small fortune for it.   Cheesy

Hi,

I was actually looking at the link provided , for something completely different, and the first occupation in it, caught my attention, although it most likely has nothing to do with the medalion, but interesting thought non the less.

ABECEDARIAN.....A teacher of the alphabet.

Go Up Go Down

In the 1930s and 1940s, Howard Thurston and Harry Kellar were competing for the spot of top magician touring the USA. They were friends, much like the pro wrestlers of today who pretend to be mortal enemies in the ring. To fuel the fires of their fans, they issued coins which were sold or given away at performances. Several varieties of the coins have the word Abracadabra on them. Magician John Mulholland also issued coins but his vanity wouldn't allow him to omit his name from the coin. His always had a profile bust of the great magician himself. Ah, show business! You have to love it.

This is not to suggest that the coin you have is from that era but nobody, to my knowledge, has cataloged the variety of coins of that time so it could be one.

For further research on the word Abracadabra, go here:

Those who wear that word on an amulet are followers of Gnosticism leaning towards a reminder of Abraxas. That medallion of yours may very well be a later one of those. Your quest for information can be as much fun as unearthing your find.

Thats so cool that you referenced Thurston & Kellar! I remember reading when I was in grade school how they were the great prestidigitators of the era and Harry Houdini (Erich Weiss?) was very much influenced by them. Originally, one of them was the others protege' if I remember correctly. I cant remember if it was Thurston or Kellar. Thats very interesting that they had coins made. that gives me another angle ot look into as to where this thing came from. Mullholland sounds vaguely familiar, he sounds like a real pompous one! Thanks for that info that was good stuff!
