Go Up Go Down

Found a piece of molten down metal in my folks
backyard. I strongly suspect it is silver. My ML Expl. II said silver, it is an old enough area that old doing strange things to stash wealth, finally it looks like silver under the outer crust. There is no rust. Stainless steel was not prominent in the 20's. It is not magnetic. It has heft (.88 ozt.). I need to get a graduated cylinder to test density. It is NOT lead. It is NOT aluminum. So is there any way chemically to test it for being silver? Also, what is the specific gravity of silver?

Thanks

Sean

nitric acid s what I use but Homefire gave us a tip about using a shampoo that sounds like it may be a good test. Maybe he will retell us the tip

From Homefire

Silver can be confirmed with good old Selsun Blue Shampoo!

It turns anything with significant silver content the most cool Cobalt Blue.  Sulfides it real fast, and can be recleaned with the touch of aluminum foil and some salt.

Find an inconspicuous spot on the silver item and place a drop of nitric acid on it. Watch the spot for color changes; green indicates a fake while a creamy color means you have authentic silver.
I use an ice pick to scratch a piece in case its plated.

Like the old Sulfide Medications for Infections, it Works.

It will Sulfide it to the max. Then you can Clean it up by Reversing the Process.

Aluminum Foil in the bottom of a dish, Baking Soda or Salt.  Hot Water.  Real Hot! no Micro Wave!

This test will Prove .925 Sterling for sure.

Try it on any thing junk you have to start.

It will not hurt the good stuff.

Unless you think it would damage any thing.

DO NOT USE THIS ONE

Just tried the selsun blue method... no results.

I suppose I will toss it in the "cool finds" tin and try something later when I can derive more information from it.

Thanks all,

Sean
