ahoy matey's,
been a while since I've been on this site, but I am back and need
yer help.  I found what appears to be a solid copper, maybe not copper, medallion with the likeness of I think the virgin Mary, with
a chalice and red stone atop the chalice.  Found detecting a 4' deep
dirt trench in south florida.  Appreciate any help in identifying it.
thanks matey's.  aargh.

It looks like it may be silver and very old. The marks on the back show it was hand made. I would rub a soft cloth on the back and see if any of the black comes off.

Not being a catholic or anything, I'm intrigued by the symbolism of the red stone attached above the chalice.

Have you considered taking it by a Catholic or Greek Orthodox authority, maybe on the diocese level or the university level.  Perhaps you could seek such a level of contributor on some forums on the net.

I'm curious as to what you learn about your find.  Please keep us posted, even tho' this is an older thread.

Hey megan,
I did ID the medallion or rather the owner of my pool store did.
The medallion is of St.Barbera.  She is the patron saint of miners,
Field Artillery, of which I served in long ago, my B-day 11.16.62, Bomb disposal, I think also fire fighters and a couple others.

She is also the favord Patron for the Santeria stuff.  The medal is quite heavy and scratched gold, but dissoloved under 10 kt acid.

I did actually see one just like it about a month ago in the pet store on a hispanic woman it was probably 18kt, exactly like the one I found.  It was kind of spooky.

Did a little hunting in some cuts on the beach today  nada.

catch ya later aarg

THANKS!  Didn't know we miners had a patron saint.  Kiss   I'm going to go study up on that now.

RE: yours not being gold and that other lady's being gold...there are rich miners and poor miners, right?  And we need all the saintly help we can get!

Hey matey's,
Glad u enjoyed the reply.
I agree we can use all the divine help we can get.
There is actually a prayer to St. Anthony to recover stolen or lost objects, which I pray occasionally.
Think I'm gonna try again this morning in the water.
Hollywood Fl.
Shiver me timbers aargh.

flightseven  (of 9?? ala startrek? oh boy!) Shocked

Hi;

That definately looks like silver... copper only gets a black patina with special chemicals. Try a zinc plate, and a solution of washing soda, dissolved in warm water... put the medallion on the plate and cover with the washing soda.... its non-destructive. Wise

If that is sterling silver, that may be a ruby or precious garnet. Then again, glass is a possibility, try a dichroscope. I dont remember if Rubies or garnets are dichroic, or not. Again, its non distructive, and no need to dis-mount the gem.

Brian AKA goldigger (now WHERE did I put my dichroscope???) Detecting
