wilfredo, I must apologize for myself and my fellow moderators.
A nail in a tree is almost always just a nail in a tree. Usually it was put there because someone wanting to hang something such as a sign (lost child, reward for capturing a bad person) or a mirror, or string some fencing or lighting wire from one point to another. Sometimes a nail means that some one made a temporary shelter by stretching a piece of canvas between 4 trees and used nails to hold the canvas in place.
A square nail IS different from a round nail because square nails often are handmade and are often older than round nails. Other than that, there is no special meaning to a nail. It is just that we have so many people asking what an ordinary object (usually a rock) means just because it looks a little different from what they are used to seeing and they WANT to believe that it is a treasure sign that it was hard to resist "pulling your leg" just a little bit.
Honestly, all the nail means was that someone was there before you and had to attach something to the tree for some reason. It isn't a sign to treasure although it may have once held a sign that pointed to either the latrine or to the hospital.
If you truly are on the trail of treasure, it MIGHT help you if you could figure out when the nail was made and who may have used it......but that is a very hard thing to do as most people use whatever nail they find laying around (I have been known to use nails my grandfather bought 65 or more years ago).
