Mostly the patterns of the bark, and growth habit. Aspen sucker freely from the roots so you will large stands of similar trees. Also that aspen are quite common in Utah whereas birch are not unless cultivated. I happen to be a plant and tree nut as well so I can readily identify most species on the continent by sight. The two are very similar in appearance although the birch will have more of a papery bark.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that it was from the pattern on the bark but then I was not sure.

All the best

Nope  of these markings are of a long lost map or tree craving ,they are all to young of a tree.Even if the trees were large enough if they were very old symbols would quite large as the tree grows so would the symbols larger and larger. This is interesting to see but no ture treasure there,I'm trying to learn as much as I can on tree cravings there r some still some 200 year old trees still around with some real interestings markings on them that go back to the days of JJ and dates to match. Is there a site I can go to to learn more?

I have a tree that is over 250 years old. A maple tree. They start out as seedlings, then saplings and finally a full grown tree of 6 inches or more and a whopping 20 feet tall. That old tree is over 80 feet tall and anything carved into it back in the 1700s would probably be up around 60 feet or so.

As I have already said earlier in this topic, your trees are far too young to be bearing ancient treasure sign. Sorry. Just enjoy them for what they are. A gathering place where people carved notes to each other into trees. Then take our your detector and search for whatever they dropped.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

If I'm not mistaken, this is Populus grandidentata (American aspen). Judging from your photos, it is a relatively young trees are not more than 30-40 years. Heights at maturity are around 60-80 ft with diameters of 8-10 ft. They are fast growing and are relatively short-lived; stands will begin to deteriorate after 60–70 years, while individuals can live up to 100 years. (Quote from Wikipedia). However, this does not mean that you will not find anything there... Your treasure is somewhere near Wink

I don't know about that, the sixth pic looks like it says Jesus and has a cross. Unless one of those teens was having mid binge spiritual moment.
