Go Up Go Down

 Hello
Happy new year to all.
I have found a round beacon made of copper,10cm diameter. It was buried and hidden in a forest and cemented. There is an equilateral triangle of 6cm length each side.It is written TANGANYIKA TRIANGULATION SURVEY.
Can some one please tell me what is triangulation survey and how do I calculate the distance from the beacon to a  German mine or site which I believe is somewhere near that beacon.
Thanks.
Greetings from Tanzania. Welcome

Sounds like a Survey Marker.   Leave it alone.

Homefire is correct.

In the US, these disks would be known as benchmarks.   They are used in surveying and mapmaking.   They identify a known location and usually include either the exact longitude and latitude of the location or they have a code that allows the surveyor to look up the information in a logbook or on a computer.   They often also include the exact height above sea-level.   You can accurately locate any position on earth if you know the distance and direction from that spot to any two of these disks.  That is where the term "triangulation" comes in.

If you can find another of these triangulation disks and an old map that has the mine (or if you have the longitude and latitude of the mine), then yes you can use these disks to help you find the mine.

BA. I believe the term bench mark in surveying is usually an elevation marker or bench mark elevation reference. The triangulation symbol only without an elevation is a triangulation marker.

Thanks.  I'm glad it's not the first time I've been wrong about something, or I might be hurt.  Instead I feel like my store of knowledge has been increased.   Either way, don't move it.

it is a survey marker. Some states have laws about removing them.  All in all a cool find. too bad you did not take a photo of the direction the marker was pointing. I am sure it is old and forgotten but if you want to find out for sure at your local county office.
