Hello all. I found this button today at a location with regular war and troop movement activity since the 1700's can any one better help me identify it. About all I can tell you is this was very deep. Aprox 9 to 10 inches. Found at the site of a small marina, I think it may have at one time been plated . I know nothing about buttons or military clothing. I don't think its worth anything due to its poor condition. But would like to know more about it. Thank you in advance.

With that star on it, I'd suggest something to do with Texas. What's your location?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I'm in central new York. This was found along the Erie canal. It looks exactly like this button.

indicating its probably Texas militia. However its not a 3 piece button like the one in the photo. But the photo indicates it was made in ny. I wonder if it was dropped from a shipment headed for Texas. Or maybe a small militia unit came here to pick them up, and lost a button of his coat ? If it is Texas militia, wondering why it would be in ny. I'm thinking this little button has a story to tell. Just don't know what that story is Huh??

Could be a Texas Star Civil War button.  Any old Civil War prisoner of war camps near where you found it?  If there was, it could have come from a prisoner maybe working or being shipped on the Erie Canal.  There was a famous Union Prisoner of War camp in Elmira, New York.  Is that by where you found this?

This was found a few miles from Herkimer NY. I looked up Elmira I'm about 150 miles away from it by road.

Well it may not be a military button at all.  While looking around I see these types of buttons are still being made today, in all kinds of metals.

Here's one -

So unless you found it in a known place of military significance it's kind of hard to tell whether it may be a real old mitary button, such as the Texas one, or just some old button dropped 20 or 30 years ago.

You are welcome.  I wasn't implying that your button wasn't old, only that the design as a button has been around for a long, long time.  This makes it hard to date it.  If it was found with other civil war or revelutionary war items or a known military area, than it could be an old military button, but if not, it could be difficult to determine the real age.  Good luck.
