hi fellow detectorists. this is my first post, hopefully not my last. found a coinlike item in a softball feild behind the old oregon city high school about 8 years ago. it is brass or bronze and in pretty good condition. it was dug from a depth of about 10 inches, is about the same size as a clad half dollar, and has some markings on it very similar to those on a piece of eight. i was told by a  local oldtimer when they built this ballfeild they used fill  dirt from down by the mouth of the clackamas river where it joins the willamette river. found other coins adjacent from the 50's at same depth. any thoughts? it has no monotary value on it. thanks in advance, busypj, now in pendleton, oregon

HI Busypj

I had a look on Google image but did not find it then I looked at your token and it seems to have V.S on it so I Googled it and I found Victoria School, it was started in 1876 here is the link

thanks for your help. im not sure if thats the vs on the coin, but its as good a lead as ive had. they have a school crest, but its nothing like the coins. i will email them to see if they claim it. if so, its a long way from home, and maybe i dug a little deeper than i thought! ive attached a pic of the coin it resembles to me. thanks again, pj

Smiley Yep well I could be way off track and by the looks of things the emblem resembles yours a lot, what you have could be a commemorative coin of some sort

one guy i talked to years ago when i first found it said he thought it might be a gift given out to those attending a wedding for an hispanic family with the brides initials being vs. if that was the case you would think they would put a date on it. also seems like that would be pretty expensive to get coins struck, i know our government spends about 50 times their face value to make them,  along with toilet seats and other necessities. thinking it comes from the 1800s is way more fun than just any old wedding.

so, the back side is patterned after the lesser Royal Arms of Spain ca 1700.   I say patterned, because the castle in the upper left quadrant isn't a very good representation of the original.  It is possible that this is simply a gaming token with no real significance.  I'm not saying that's the case, just putting it forward as a possiblity

I'm thinking the VS should actually be a VB .   There are several clearer examples of this online, all of which show the initials VB in the crown.......Compare:
