When asking for help identifying an object, please either include something familiar in the picture (such as a common coin or a ruler) so that we can get a sense of scale or provide the dimensions in the body of the text.  Two objects can look similar but have very different functions based on size.

Without more to go on, I think Adrian is on the right path.....an antique handle of some sort (not necessarily for a gas light fixture).   How old is the high school and what occupied the site before the current building was built?
