I had a guy measure it today. The caliber measurement is just under 50. He said they look to him like a trapdoor 50-70.

Right, that's why I'm puzzled. It measures about .44 diameter.
I had looked around and thought it looked like a Whitworth, but he said they are all hexagonal shaped. Mine are more cylindrical shaped.

I am an EOD guy, small arms (.50 cal and below) can be researhed in the old TM 43 series manuals.  The one pertaining to small arms can be seen at this link.  These data sheets only have line drawings, but it has a lot of info.  They have these pubs for everything U.S.military wise.  They have one for grenades, pyro, projectiles, rockets, etc.  I use them to ID old stuff when out on a call.  Hope this helps.  I also have some civil war ordnance pubs in pdf, but I dont think thes are that vintage! Hope this helps!

I notice the link was taken out.  So do a search for TM 43-001-27.  There are mutiple places to down load it.

Thanks for the tip.   I second it.   I've downloaded lots of old Field Manuals for reference purposes.
