Go Up Go Down

Just picked up a Coinmaster 4000D Series 3 MD at a garage sale for $20.  Turns on just fine.  It came in a big carrying case, strap, manuals, and earphones.  It's really my first MD.  Been eyeing the Spetra but I think the "lady of the house" would feel better in me spending the $20 for my first venture into MDs.  It looks like the previous owner clipped the battery connector wires and made it so you can use 6 disposable batteries.  Not sure how much power these things draw and how that will work out, but at least it's working.  So for $20 I didn't think I could lose.  Looks almost brand new.  The disk has a white plastic shell.  Not sure what that's about.  Anyway, can anyone shed some light on whether this is a good detector?  The receipt was in the case and the guy paid $215 brand new in Nov. 1985.  Probably made his wife upset by buying her Christmas gift early. Cheesy  I know I've done that a time or two over my lifetime. Ha!  Thanks for any info.

Sounds like you got a deal for sure!

About the battery deal, Not sure.

They may have had a Opppps and just changed the battery trey.

Did they change it to a standard 9V battery clip?

As long as it takes 8 AA just run it.

Go Up Go Down

Just took it out for a spin on the GEB.  It ran fine and picked up a battery, drill bit, Susan B. Anthony and Silver dollar I planted.  So it looks like it's working fine.  As far as the battery, the manual states it comes with a 6 battery holder for disposable battery.  I just noticed a Ni-Cad battery in the case and assumed it was the battery, but apparently it comes with both.  Not sure if the Ni-Cad is any good (it's a 7.2 V 500 Ah) but doubt it.  Even the Duracell batteries in it (dated 2002) were still good to go.  I'm tickled pink.  Although I'd love to pick up a newer, better MD, I can't complain for $20.  Saw a Series 2 that sold in Apr. on ebay for $120 so I can't complain.

Apparently it comes with a 9v battery clip already.  It just looked like it was messed with, but I guess it came that way.

Hendro, You got a great deal!  Great  That was a prime detector for its day and still does a great job.  For $20 you got a real steal!  Clapp  Take your time with it and get used to what it is telling you.  The more you use it, the better you will get with it.  Good luck!   Detecting

Thanks Arfieboy,  I know of a sand volleyball court nearby I may check out just to run it through its initial phases and help me get use to it.  The guy wasn't sure it was working.  It was his dads.  He was having a estate/garage sale and clering out stuff.  It looked almost new so I took a chance.  I figured it was only $20 and I might be able to sell it for parts if it wasn't working.  Anyway it checks out initially and I'm eager to get using it.  Apparently the plastic over the coil is to make it somewhat waterproof.

The white plastic shell may be what is called a coil cover.  It is a protective shield that fits over the bottom of the search coil to protect it from bumps and from wear should you scrub the ground with your coil.  Just a little added protection for the coil.

Go Up Go Down

I went hunting with the new (old) MD mentioned above in the city park.  They had a sand volleyball pit and thought that would be a good place to start.  Found various metal wires, steel pins, little girls pink berrett, washer, horseshoe nail, the ever present pull tab, scrap pits of aluminum and a dime and penny.  Some girls at the park came by to ask what I was doing.  I showed them the stuff and I gave one of them the berrett.  Threw away most everything else (so if I scanned again I wouldn't find them again) and kept the dime and penny.  Now I'm ony down $19.89. Ha!  But the detector worked great.

great deal, thats a great way start out and  to see if MDing is for you or not. If its something you enjoy and do alot, you can upgrade to a newer detector later. I have an old coinmaster, still works and it has a gazillion "miles" on it  Detecting
