I ordered the DFX 300 which comes with a large coil. I plan on using this unit on both beaches and dry land. The question I have is should I order a smaller coil for a specific use?  What would be the advantages of the larger coil vs. smaller coil (I am not shooting for gold nuggets)? I have checked the board for technical questions but did not find a general response (people were asking specifically for one purpose). When would the large coil be an advantage vs. small coil? Thanks, Coloma Gold

So Mate for missing your post here, Most will tell you that the 300 coil is to big in trash and it is BUT?
I used it all last summer and I pulled out more roman coins than ever before, and with your gain down
just above half way you will dig coins down to the 12" mark, And on the beach concentric are a bit quieter
and they are better at dealing with EMI.
It may make your for arms ache a little if your not use to it but that will soon change.
theres something about that coil that give a person confidence, I have done alot of testing with it
and it will pickup nuggets of lead of around 0.2 grams or just under and they have and do use it with
alot of success in Alaska to find nuggets and this year they did find a wopper,
1 guy has found a 1oz+ nugget at between 16" - 18" with it so it will give you an edge, I hope this ansewers
your questions and helps.

Thanks RidgeRunner...

I am happy with the large coil but in order to handle the trashy areas (beaches), I decided to buy a DD 6 x10 eclipse coil also and I bought the book "Digging deeper with the DFX" by Jeff Foster to try to fully understand the DFX 300. Hopefully, after reading the book and 'playing' around with my new MD, I will be able to dominate the beaches... Coloma Gold

Thats good news that you have bought all the good stuff,

Please not that on mineralized beaches the the DD will be your best option
and that the best all round coil for that machine is the 950 concentric,
there is also a 10" DD that fits the V3i which will almost match its depth
and better seperation, and the 5.3 for real trashy sites, the 4x6 is not really a coil
that you would need for coin hunting and the 5.3 will match the 6x10 on clean ground,

good luck

Thanks for the info Ridge Runner...
Although I've had an XLT for 12 yrs, I really didn't have much of a chance to do much with it during my working life, hence, I did not really learn much about the actual operation with it.. I merely turned it on, chose a pre-planned program and searched... not much luck with it either. Not the machine's fault.  However, now that I have upgraded and no longer have to go to work, I want to learn MUCH more about it and detecting in general, especially since I now live in a different area full of possible surprises. Your info helps.  I forgot to mention, I also purchased 2 add'l books on metal detecting. I guess I'll have plenty to read during the winter?!  I hope to get to use the DD 6x10 on the local beaches soon.

That coil is a push over to use most Folks in the US leave them on 95% of the time,
and it is light and you will pull coins around the 10" mark with it so hang in there
