Hey everyone, I saw a post on using a small piece of metal held in your finger while using the pinpointer to increase sensitivity. So I gave it a try and it works great. I was able to double my detection distance. However I kept losing my washer,  I went out to my scrap bin and found a small piece of wire I wrapped it around the tip and am able to slide it up and down to get max sensitivity without it getting lost all the time. Super easy and cheap

Maybe it's just me but I cannot for the life of me figure out why anyone needs more sensitivity in a pinpointer. You don't need depth. What you need is accuracy. Your target is already on the surface. You don't use one to find your target in the earth. That's a sure way to damage your pinpointer.

I need more because my lone star doesnt pinpoint worth a darn. Although my new Omega should be here today or tomorrow Grin. It doesnt make it a depth master topping out at a little over an inch, before you had to be almost touching your target.

That's how a pinpointer works. You don't need it to be a deep seeking device. Changing the focus (which is all you are doing) makes pinpointing less accurate.

You'll still find your items easier but you aren't improving the circuitry in making it a deep seeker. There is no value in making the detection area less focused in a pinpointer.

I honeslly have no clue why everyone starting out in this hobby is so concerned with the depth of a target. When you first use a detector, your depth is horrible but not because the machine is a bad one. It's bad because you haven't yet learned your machine. Over time your experience will increase and you will detect targets you would never have found when you first started. Your abilities will improve at the same rate at which you learn your machine. When you pick your next machine, your experience will guide you. An experienced hunter doesn't come back here looking for advice on what machine to buy next. What they ask for is specifics regarding interaction with soils, scraps of debris or wet/dry conditions. They never ask about depth. Only the beginners do that.

Well as I am still pretty new to this it is very helpful to me to be able to find a target in the hole or in the plug, but unmodified if your more than an half an inch into the plug it wont sense it, then I have to beat up the plug. An inch works very well for me, you could probably achieve the same effect by replacing the sensitivity pot with a higher quality one (the factory one isnt very smooth) the wire is just allowing me to fine tune the sensitivity to the breaking point. I am 2/3 of the way through building the petro-pointer project, gotta find a piezo beeper in my junk box still, it will be interesting to see if it is more sensitive than the bullseye. As I stated previously the lone star has no pinpoint or depth and is a plateau trigger, so no variance of the target signal strength. I havent gotten my Omega yet (darn slow mail) but the depth and pinpoint features should allow me to make much smaller plugs and not have to go searching for my targets. Thanks for putting up with us kids GoldDigger : )

As I said earlier, you are not increasing sensitivity. You are de-focusing your field but that's neither here nor there.

Here's how to pinpoint with your Bounty Hunter machine. After you find a target, raise your detector up a tiny bit at a time as you swing back and forth over the target. The higher you go, the smaller the image of the target will sound. Just as it seems to be at its smallest, look down through the central loop and right there in the middle will be your target. In case you wonder how I know this, I have two Bounty Hunter machines in my arsenal.

Alright I will give that a try, I keep going back and forth wondering if my detector is working correctly, when I borrowed my friends pioneer I had no trouble pinpointing a 2" circle, but with mine its more like a 6" circle. depending on the target it may register between the coils or in the center. I did some air testing trying to get the hang of it and it was pretty hit or miss. And the other day it was chattering constantly even with the sensitivity all the way down only to work fine an hour later, maybe EMF issues? I dug a clip on ferrite choke out of my junk box and will try that next time I get a chance.

Another way is to Place the Coil on th ground over the Target Area and Switch to ALL Metal.  This some what detunes the detector and lets you pin point quite well.
