The TR stands for Transmit/Receive meaning that it is a machine that turns the transmit coil on, shuts it off, waits for a tiny fraction of time and then turns on the receiver to catch any return from metal. That happens between 5,000 and 300,000 times per second. This is a tired and proven technology and the machine could be a real gem. I've never owned on but those who own them swear by them.

Don't pay more than $40.00 for it but only if working. If not working, see about getting it free because repairs will cost more than it's worth.
