The TR stands for Transmit/Receive meaning that it is a machine that turns the transmit coil on, shuts it off, waits for a tiny fraction of time and then turns on the receiver to catch any return from metal. That happens between 5,000 and 300,000 times per second. This is a tired and proven technology and the machine could be a real gem. I've never owned on but those who own them swear by them.
Don't pay more than $40.00 for it but only if working. If not working, see about getting it free because repairs will cost more than it's worth.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
