Don't own the MXT, but I do own the Whites Eagle Spectrum and a Whites Prizm 6T. Both allow notching discrim. for pulltabs. From my experience, I typically do not notch out as some really small coins and rings may pick-up.

If you follow this rule of thumb and encounter a large number of pulltabs, then notch it out.

I would rather put up with digging some pulltabs than miss a really nice target.

Good hunting with the MXT! Detecting

The filtering on almost every metal detector can be wrong so you really should dig all of your targets. Some folks use it as a gauge to determine the method of digging more than the actual result. Over time, you will be able to detect subtle differences between a pulltab, a nickle and a ring - all of which will be notched out to some degree if you select pulltab notching. Experience with your machine will reveal tiny differences in the sound pitch and timing that will give you the edge you need.

For now, dig them all with equal care. Later, you can dig those that are unquestionably pulltabs with less care than those that sound a bit like a coin or ring.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
