Hi, just wondered if someone who has used at the Classic SL on an ocean beach could give us an idea of the best settings for using it in wet sand or in the water? Thanks in advance. Giorgio

Hello Giorgio,

you can use the SL on the beach but it will probably produce some noise / false signals due the mineralization. Espeically when used on wet sand or the water but it should do okay when turning down the sens a little and adjusting the ground balance properly. Good luck detecting!

Regards,

Christian

Its been my experience that not many mid range machines do  well on the the beach. Most of the beach only machines work well but don't discriminate well.    If you plan to do a lot of beach hunting you may want to find a high end machine that can deal with beaches high mineral content . $700 or more.   Lips Sealed

The classic series, even the III with its "black sand" switch, are NO good on wet sand beaches, but excellent on the dry.

Hi all  Rider
Is there any conclusion as to what brand and model detector is best one on the beach Smiley

In terms of efficiency, I use different detectors for dry or wet sand.

Wet sand demands PI units or FBS/BBS ones.

Some motion detectors offer a "beach" or "salt elimination" mode, but that is no good, as it is simply a higher disc setting, eliminating foil and thus white and/or thin gold jewelry.

I hunt dry sand with old-fashioned high frequencies TR units (detects tiny chains and gold jewelry) but motion detectors will do too (Tesoroes, for instance are good jewelry hunters).

Recent losses on the beach are shallow.

I think that a lot depends on personal experience and the type of beaches you're hunting.

Go Up Go Down

Just had to reply as my tests was carried out 6 wks ago on the sands of the beaches of Carolina Beach/Wilmington NC.

I used the Whites Classic SL IDX with the bluemax 950 coil, the machine worked fine on the dry sand and on the wet to my pleasure. Black sand switch used on the wet with discrimination tuned down and tuned down sensitivity slightly, till the machine ran without hardly any false signals. One of the main things to remember is, while searching the wetsand, one needs to make vertical straight line sweeps from the oceans edge up to the start of the dry sand then turn directly around and head back down to the surfs edge in straight lines of search patterns which seem to help this and other detectors that are not made predominantly for the wet sand per say.

Hope that helped answer something, as the beaches here in the USA are quite different than those of the EU or AU and elsewhere.  Great

Cheers,
Jim
