Howdy,

I was given a non-working 70's metal detector. The problem? No sound via either the speaker or headphones. I know a bit about electronics and have done what I can without a schematic (cleaned pots, replaced all electrolytic caps, cleaned connectors) but no joy.

There is a chance I can fix it if I could find a schematic. No luck finding one online so far. Anyone here have one?

Questions:

1. I read that this is a rebranded White's. I might have better luck finding a schematic if I knew which White's it was for the search. Does anyone know?

2. This was a pretty pricey model back in the day. Around $300 in 1975. Is this thing even worth me spending time on repairing? Are today's $300 metal detectors light years ahead of this thing?

Appreciate any advice.

Ken

How about you take a few minutes to introduce yourself to the membership here? I sympathize with your needs, having repaired my fair share of detectors. Even if we could help you right now, you need a minimum of 5 posts to use the download section.

For what it's worth, I don't believe that is a Whites detector. You could actually CALL them and ask. They're most helpful.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Whites did in fact make detectors for Sears for a while.

Say a Howdy in the New Comers thread, Eaaaaa?

Yep, they were made for Sears by White's.  That model used to have the White's manufacturing tag on them for a while.  I believe they were manufactured in the 1970's.  White's would be the place to find out about them.   By the way, welcome to the forum from Oregon.   Welcome

It looks a bit like a 4DB. Here is a link to the manual:

For some reasons that link goes no place for me.  I did find this one.
Out of the Piles and Piles of Whites Schematic I don't seem to have this one.
I do have the Basic Whites TR that may be of some us ?  Not much to it.

Don't work ?   Does it fire up ?  Not Tune ?  Just Dead Bug ?

I would start with the Basics like Battery connections and contacts.
