I'm possibly interested in upgrading my MD, but want to compare brands. Can someone tell me what the Whites equivalent of the Garrett Ace 250 and 350 would be?

If you were to compare the Whites with the Garrett, which one would you go with? Why?

I'll be doing about 90% looking for coins/silver. So, if I'm way off the mark here on a MD, please let me know. I have a budget of not more than $300 too.

Thanks!
 Grin

About as close as you will come to a 250 is the Whites Coinmaster pro. I only test one for maybe 15 min so want give an opinion but one of the regular west end hunters says he wish he had his 250 back every time I see him.
I think you are missing out by only looking at Garrett and Whites, I suggest you also look at the Fisher f 4 and 5 and at the Tesoro Silver Max

OK, maybe I will - can you tell me a little bit about them? What's their price range, and are they going to be good for coinshooting? I live in Utah, so no beaches for me. Maybe a volleyball court now and then.

The Fisher F4 (with "$320.60 worth of accessories") is currently listed on Kellyco at $399.00.   You can pick up a good used one for considerably less than that.  I acquired one in mid to late October.  It is quickly becoming my default detector for general purpose use (in part because it is lighter than the other detectors I have).   If you really want to know what an F-4 is capable of, take a gander at some of Bugfly's finds.   He uses an F-4 exclusively and has had some great finds.

The Tesoro will run you about $240 - $300.00 new.   It doesn't have any fancy meters, so you'll definitely be digging by sound, but it's a real well built machine backed by a great warranty.   Tesoros are always on my short list of detectors to look at (and my next detector probably will be either a Lobo Super Traq or one of their water units when they are back on the market.

The Tesoro silver is a no frills detector No meter 2 knobs easy to learn. I borrowed one from a friend a few months ago to field test it Its on my list after I replace my water detector. The only drawback was learning to us it in wet sand. You want have that problem.

Garrets low end detectors are way better than white's  in my opinion when I've been to group hunts.  but as soon as you start getting around the 1000 dollar mark whites are better.

A lot is going to depend on soil conditions also.   I've done better with a White's Classic 5 ID in heavily mineralized soil than I have with a Garrett GTAx 1250.

Here's what I've found:
White's starts with a "W" and the Garrett starts with a "G".
Both find metal in the ground.
