No doubt Homefire.  I used to go thru my own yard with different techniques five times a week before I truly found all that I would with the BH 505.

Well, I bought my four inch sniper coil and found a silver quarter and two dimes in the smae spots that I had hunted many times.

As of now, I am really torn over getting something that I can go into the water with or not.  I do know of a place that should be prime territory that people have been hanging out at for dcecades but it is waiste deep and I would not just bring any detector with waterproof coils there.  I would only bring a truyly scuba rated unit because I would not trust myself without the extra insurance.

I know that I could easily pay for it at this site but the detector that I have my sites set on is the excalibur but that is double my current price range.  I guess that I will come across something that catches my eye sooner or later and take that step.

You see, I am really high on multi freqw units so it's tough for me to look at anything else.

Does anyone have any advice on a good used scuba rated unit besides the excalibur that uses three or more freqs at the same time and compares them through high speed logic?

Thnx for your opinion Mike.  Before I started hunting, I would have never thought that so many places had been hunted so thoroughly before I started.   I was always the kind of fisherman that out fished everyone else but when I transfered that tenacity over to my metal detecting, it didn't work when others beat you to the spot by a decade.

Do you like the multi freq unit's best or is there something our there that you like in particular that someone can pick up for $500US or less used?

The Multi Freq thing is Hype in most machines.

Most that claim to use Multi Freq Don't.

They just use harmonics of a base Freq on the Receive side. Grin

I have an older Minelab Sovereign. People that own them really love them because you can get a lot of information from the tone, even in all metal mode. The Excaliber is a legendary water machine. That said there is quite a learning curve and they are heavy.  I suggest you visit some forums that have a page for the Sovereign/Excaliber to learn about it. Also a guy named Clive Clynick (can't recall the exact spelling but he goes by cjc. Look on the "For Sale" page) has books you should get. That guy is a real pro and his books are just packed with info. I have one titled "Finding gold and silver with the Sovereign and Excaliber" or something like that. Best metal detecting book I have ever read.

I have nothing against White's but that series 2 machine was last made in 1983. It was an antique ten years ago. I don't know what year Excaliber you are looking at but some of them are old, too. My Sovereign must be close to twenty years old. I don't think the factory will even serice that old model anymore. Don't know about the Excalibers, but you should check to find out. Maybe you can get the price down if that is the case.

Thaank you all for your replies.  I ended up getting a white's Eagle Spectrum and am now going thru it to fix an intermittant power problem.  It seems to stem from ashort to chasis or a short between compnents.

Either way, I will find it now that I have obtained schematics from this site.  Thx again.

No #1 that's too much for an older detector   No#2 get an used M6 or MXT and stay with it. They are good for coins or civil war sites.
