Beachhunter ID, Fisher CZ70 Pro, Whites Surfmaster PI

Hello. I have an old Surfmaster PI that I just love, but recently it has started chattering (for lack of a better word whenever the coil gets wet or I have used it for more than a couple of hours). Any ideas if it can be sent somewhere to get it fixed, and what cost am I looking at?? I love this detector quite a lot because when it beeps there is something there to dig (someting that is not always true, with my BeachHunter ID, or my Fisher CZ70 Pro). Thanks (I've been looking on ebay for a replacement but no luck so far).

Call Whites and ask them.

They still work on those.

Stop in at The New Users Introduction board and say hi to the folks here.

Welcome from New Mexico.

They still make them and if you have'nt used a coil cover then you may of worn a small hole in it, other than that check that the
gland nut where it goes into the coil may have come loose if it has put silicone sealent under the top locking nut and retighten
it and that should stop it, but you must give it a few days to dry out, if the coil has a hole in it then it's time to get a new one

Now I feel really stupid...I never considered using a coil cover to see if the chatter goes away, but that is probably because I've never used a coil cover on any of my detectors. But it is probably a good idea since they are likely cheaper than a new coil. I think it is time to see if I can find any shops in Vancouver, BC that sells coil covers. Thanks for the suggestion.

Oh, I did write Whites a month or so ago thru feedback on their website but I never got anything back from them so I figured that the Surfmaster II was too old for them to bother with

If you have'nt used a coil cover then you may have a small hole in the base of the coil, so your coil maybe stuffed already

but dry it out by turning it up side down in the sun for a few days bringing it in at night then try it on dry land.

try and look for any holes or splits on the seems, and take it to you local dealer and see if they will try one of their coils on it

if it is the coil then get a new one but in future always use a coil cover.

there is a thread called are coil covers a waste of money, OK
