As a "newbie" I have been looking at a number of different metal detectors to possibly purchase. Recently found a White's Electronic Surf PI Pro listed, read some reviews on it, but like to hear what the pro's here have to say about it. As I live by the ocean, I would most definitely be using on the beach. Is it a good unit for a "newbie"? And so on, and so forth.

I have 2 of them. Overall. I really like them. One is stock and the other is modded for small gold. They are of course PI machines and have good depth. Just remember they pick up everything, no discrimination. In dry sand they will drive you nuts with small bobby pins etc. I dig most readings and after a while you get a feel for a good reading. Salt water is no problem. Whites has 2 different models, one with buoyant and another with non buoyant coil. The non buoyant coil is better in the water as it doesn't try to float up. That said. I still do OK using the buoyant loop. For a beach machine in and out of the water I think they are great. If you are only going to do dry sand you might want to get something with discrimination and the ability to get near salt water.

Jim, Thank you for your quick response. I also wanted to ask. Is there an issue with the headphones being  stationary? Also, is it possible to change the coil, too one that would not be so sensitive?
So, basically, from your post, your saying it would be a good starter unit, as I will be working the beaches and in the ocean.
  Cool

By stationary I am assuming hard wired. They are hard wired for use in water. The detector can be submerged up to the headsets. There are some good books on the Surf PI and I'm sure other users will chime in here. You would not want to change the coil. The trick is after getting experience using it you will start to be able to make out subtle differences in the tone and make better decisions on digging.
