Manual Ground Bal.

Sensitivity as high as you can run without Falsing.

Standard Coil should be good for .5 Gram or better I hear.

Never used that machine my self but I travel with a guy that does.

He uses a Standard Coil and find the goods down to .25 or less grams.

Thanks for reply back. I have manual for this detector, but I'm asking personal experience who used GMT metal detector.

I use the GMT here in Equador   I run on  auto most of the  Time with a standard coil Can usually crank teh gain all the way that gives a little more depth.    I found a half gram nugget last week deep in a crack in bedrock  the exact depth i really don't know cause when you pry stuff open teh Nugget seems to always keep sliping deeper.    But  the manual  has a way to manually get a bit more sensitivity by tuning it just a bit hot  But I have never found that to be a huge advantage  ..  I play with the GAin on auto  and keep it as high as it will go with out allot of noise.
I have a TDI pro also  they are great machines   The GMT  always amazes me  how small a piece of Gold it will find

This is really not possible to answer because even if you know the geology of Ecuador, we still don't know what the actual land you are on consists of in terms of oxides and so forth. What you need to do is find a small area that you believe to be free of actual gold ore right near where you are going to look. If you accidentally use a spot that DOES have gold ore, well you'll know but your ground balance will not be set. If you are gold free, set it according to the manual and then move on. Even a distance of 5 feet away from your clean area can mean the mineralization could be different and require another adjustment.

No matter where I go, there is never, ever a smooth, homogeneous mixture of elements over a large area to make this job easy. I have never found a place where I can set and forget the ground balance. I am constantly adjusting it. The only exception to this is my Groundhog, which has a setting for automatic ground balancing. The depth is reduced in this mode so I rarely use it.

I don't know if you noticed  I mentioned I run it on Auto ground balance  I understand how to ground balance a detector  But as you said the ground changes all the time  ..  so the supposed gain in depth by going manual  is just not worth it to me.
Ecuador is different also cause its vertually Virgen ground for detectors.  I'd rather cover more ground in Auto than mess with manual  GB all day.
the hard hit places you have in the states I can understand  you wanting to get every bit of depth you can.
I'm By no means a pro at detecting  But a small amount of time on a GMT  is really all you need to be quite good  with it.
when someone goes with me  that has never detected before I always give them the GMT and I use the TDI pro.
If i have what i think is a good target     if  the GMT is close   i always have them take a swipe over the target  too  saves me allot of digging
GMT  is really Good about that.     The only thing I have trouble with is aluminum faking me out but luckly there is not much here.

The GMT (48khz) will pick up SPECKS around a Third of A Grain or Less Just below the Surface and for that you need the 6x4 Shooter Coil and after that the King of the Specks is the Fisher Gold Bug (71khz), Its better the GMT on the smaller stuff and after that your only choice is to pan it all,

With the GMT unless the ground is changing all the time then you should be running it in Fixed Because The GMT only Takes TWO Pumps of the coil to ground balance it and it will Very Quickly Track out Possible Target, An d if the ground is not too wild it will do it with Just One Pump of the coil, Yes it can go deeper But if you put the 14x8 coil on it (YUCK ITS HORRIBLE TO USE) you may loose out on the smaller stuff Ok

Hope this helps, RR

Well, that is a mistake for certain. Virgin ground or not, your machine is only just that. A machine. And they make mistakes. One out of 10 pop top readings turns out to be a gold ring. Are you really willing to miss those? I'm not. I dig every target every time.

The easy way to see it is to find a highly mineralised rock and set the detector to tracking and lay it down then stand by the coil and bring the rock up to the coil and take it away again then bring it up again and take it away again and the next time it will make little or no noise, Railroad slag from the boilers works best as it makes a slight noise even after it has balanced it out,

good luck, RR
