I'm new to the forums too and am new at getting into metal detecting.  I have looked at the specs of a lot of good detectors, but the more I read, the more I come back to the V3i.  I have a degree in enfineering and work with computers extensively so technical gadgets don't faze me.  Sometimes the gadget can be as fun as using it.  The V3i is pricey and is the only thing that is keeping me from jumping is so fast, but I don't want to pay $600 to $800 for a detector only to wish later I had used the same dollars to get a V3i.

That's where I am also, I have detected off & on for 40 years, sold my minelab explorer 5 years
ago, just wanted to wait awhile and give technology a chance to grow
I think the V3i is my next adventure Cheesy

I have a Vision. It is my first MD. The learning curve is overwhelming. So you must be patient and take each outing as a building block.
Good Luck

Larry, this machine is unlike any other in its capabilities, it does have a learning curve but the installed programs right out of the box are a good starting point turn it on and go.  When you are comfortable with it you can change the setting to be more suitable to where you hunt.  If you have problems understanding any of its features the Whites forum is a wealth of information.

I have an XLT for years now and it has factory pre-set programs, and you can customize programs for specific needs. I would recommend it to anyone who doesnt want to spend the $$$$ for the new Whites V3i. You still have to learn what your machine is telling you and it doesnt happen over night. Happy Huntin to all.....DW

I like what I've been reading on the White's V3i and the more research I do on it against other metal detectors the more I want to purchase one. The way I look at the cost is to purchase one outright and avoid trying another White's model than upgrading. I've been down that path with other things I've purchased. So I'm going to bite the bullet and buy the V3i and forego the others.
