 [detecting]any suggestions on the easiest way to manually ground balance a whites xlt.

If it is the White's Spectrum XLT.
On page 11 of the manual and this is automatic once you turn the power on and select a program to use.
First air balance by holding coil (shaft) parallel to the ground, away from all metal objects.
Next lower the coil to the level you will be detecting at.

If you hear multiple beeps between any of the steps pressing the enter button, something isn't correct.
Follow the instructions on the LCD screen.
