In Ireland they have just dug up a WW II Spitfire that crashed during the war
the Pilot went on to join the US Air Force

Let me see if I got this right.

A American, Flying for the RAF.

His plane fails.

He ends up dropping into Southern Ireland.

Them Being Neutral, Intern him.

He escapes gets back the the UK.

They Send him Back to be Interned.

Now that there Was Messssssssssssssssed Up!

What I wouldn't give to dig one up! IMO, the Supermarine Spitfire was one of the best looking planes of WW2 (a close 2nd place is the gull winged Corsair). Was mad about that sleek beauty as a kid...had a Guillows balsa wood model, Airfix 1/72 plastic model and a Cox line control model of it. It'd be detectorist heaven to unearth a full-sized Spitfire.

Well Mate they have dug up about 4 or more in the past 5 years, one was in the middle of a crossroads
behind Buckingham Place,

The Spit Fire was made of Ply Wood.  Thin and Fast.

There only going to find the metal bits I think.

It could get shot up to the Max and still make it home.

 Turn on a dime with the Dove wings, Merline engine later turbo charged and get up to 30 thousand feet.

The only plane that surpassed it was the P-51 mustang.

Yeah Homie, I still go to the Air Shows at Biggin Hill every year and see'em and the have all the US Army/Air Force Trucks there too,
and the sound is something that will stay with you for ever, when I drove past the Air Field one day a Euro Fighter flew
about 60ft above my car and nearly blew my ears out,

Yes Homefire..it was a lovely plane. The elliptical wings were not only aerodynamically efficient, they were of great beauty. Mitchell was a genius. The English-designed Merlin engine was improved by Packard and shipped to Britain.
Very doubtful if I'll ever come across any old Spitfires here...ah well, one can dream!
