Don't know about the first picture, but the second picture is not a sign.  patterns like that occur frequently when mud dries.   dried mud eventually becomes sedimentary rock.  if it gets buried before the cracks get smoothed out or the surface gets blown away by the wind, the rock will carry the pattern.

First picture looks to me to be the result of water, freezing, earth movement.  Technically know as A Crack!
