ZAMBOANGA CITY - Three Japanese nationals who were targeting to find treasures in Zamboanga Sibugay province found themselves to have become the targets of an apparent abduction attempt on Wednesday.

Luckily, the treasure hunters escaped the suspected kidnap attempt which occurred in Alicia town in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Reports from Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police Office identified the Japanese nationals as Hiro Nakano, Koichirou Yoshioka and Yoshitel Miyake.

Police investigation said that the foreigners hired Hassanal Alsree as their guide in visiting a cave in Alicia where Japanese treasures have reportedly been found

Early morning of September 23, the Japanese nationals and Alsree, together with escorts Fedelito dela Penia, Rolito Berberio Jr, and Rolando Doronila as well as Romeo Santos Jr, rode a white passenger van to go to the cave.

They were approaching the boundaries of Barangays Timbang-Timbang and Naga-Naga in Alicia when Alsree reportedly disembarked from the vehicle. Alsree was reported to have received a call from a certain Michael alias Bobet and who reportedly is Alsree's contact to finding the cave.

While waiting for Michael, ten armed men reportedly approached the vehicle. Sensing danger, the van's driver immediately started up the vehicle and took off with his passengers. This reportedly prompted the armed suspects to open fire at the van.

The van with its passengers however were able to escape and reached a government militia detachment where they sought refuge. No one was hurt in the incident, although the van bore bullet holes.

Policemen who responded to the incident were reported to have recovered four empty shells of M16 rifle. The armed suspects however managed to escape.

Alsree meanwhile was detained and placed under investigation for possible involvement in the suspected abduction attempt.

Senior Superintendent Federico Castro Jr., Zamboanga Sibugay police director, said the the suspects are local criminals. He advised foreigners who are visiting the province to immediately coordinate with the nearest police station to provide them with appropriate security.

Castro meanwhile said the Japanese nationals flew to Manila on Thursday morning.  By Queenie Casimiro, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga
