BINGO!  We have a winner!

Of course they were not stupid. Digging elaborate tunnels and scratching clues on rocks are what makes good treasure hunting stories, not the actions of great military minds. That would probably account for these stories being "legends" and not actual history.

Hello, my opinion here is first you must have a map to the site. Next is to locate the permanent landmarks. If you miss an inch in your dig you might get to the other side of the globe and find nothing. The correct interpretation of the map and the signs on the land would give you the treasure you seek. Offcourse accident could be an excuse for a good treasure find.
