Go Up Go Down

A friend of mine said he knew where there was about 40 old bottles and I could have them if I wanted them.  (They were in his Grandmother's shed.)  If I didn't want them, then he throw them away.  I'm primarily a Gold Prospector and Relic Hunter and I don't really do anything with bottles.  Rather than see them end up in a land fill (or someone else getting them) I took the 30 minutes drive.

Turned out there were about 70 bottles!   Smiley , however they are mostly from the mid-60's to the mid 80's!   Sad  There are a few older ones.

So I came home Tuesday night and soaked them all in Dawn and hot water.  (Filled up 5 - 5 Gallon buckets!)  So last night, I thought I'd try and see if I could clean up some.  (I have to get a better bottle brush!)

The bottle on the right end is "Buffalo Ginger Ale" (1 still full and 3-4 more empty, still soaking, bottled in CHARLOTTE, NC.  (Where I live.))  Next to that the bottle says "BLUE BIRD" and there's a date at the bottom 'Oct, day date, 1925'.  The brown bottle in the middle is a Budweiser bottle.  There's 2 I have to look up.  One is a "VIRGINA DARE" (That's to the right of the 7 Up bottle) and other one that simply reads, E. L. (picture of a stag) B. Co.  (E L Bottling company, but I'm curious what the E L stands for and how old.)

I still have 3 buckets of mostly 6oz Coke embossed and 10oz Pepsi embossed bottles left to clean as well as reclean the bottles when I get a better bottle brush today.

Here are the pics so far.

E.L.B. Co. is the Eagle Lake Bottling Company from Texas, now defunct. Eagle Lake, Texas is noted for its pure silica sands used in bottle and glass making.

Thanks!  You have to wonder how a bottle from Texas Bottling Co. made it's way to North Carolina.  (Especially oen that was never opened.)  I need to clean it up.

you'd be surprised how bottles can get around (especially the major bottling companies).   When I was growing up in Texas I regularly checked to see where the soda bottles came from.  Wasn't so uncommon as to be rare to see a bottle from way out of state.   (of course the E.L.B. bottle getting to North Carolina would be a bit more challenging unless someone picked up on a cross-country trip and forgot about it).

Here's a link for info on the Virginia Dare bottle

I meant to post my follow on, but I started a new thread instead by accident.  Great information on Virgina Dare company, thanks, Brian (Charlotte49er)

In the old days, a chest cooler with a sliding rail arrangement held the soda bottles hanging by their necks. All you could see was the bottle cap to make your choice. You slid your bottle over to where it was to come out, put in your 5c and pulled out the bottle. The bottom of Coca Cola bottles always had a stamp on them denoting the city of manufacture and the date of manufacture. As a game, we always made the guy who had the bottle that traveled the furthest pay for the next round. Hard to collect on that though since the gathering around the old chest was random most of the time. Sometimes, the oldest bottle lost. Fun games. Fun times.

Ah, memories. Can you believe a Coca Cola for a mere 5 cents???
