While in England I dug up 2 12 GA, brass, pinfire bases.
Just curious as to how old they might be

Pin Fire cartridges pretty much ended in the early 1900's     Is there any markings or head stamps on them?

They came about somewhere near the 1850s +/- 20 years, some one else found one here a while back and they are quite rare and DO sell for more than you think and if it is complete you might get a bit more,

hope this help, good luck,

AU

Hi Homefire.
I could have bet you would be one replying.
Thanks.
To answer your qustion: None that I could find
It was found in a farmers turned field along with 4f cal bullets.
I was told they were from our Mustangs fighting the Luft waffer.

I stand corrected, HomeFire;
I dabbed some oil on them and found one said ELEY.LODON   upper half.    lower half has NO. 12 and   GAS?IGHT under that
The second one has writing, as well but can't be read.

I just found your last message.
All Ihave is a pretty tough base.  One is about 1/4; high and the other is about 1/2" but that's all there is.
I sent a second part to my last message correcting myself.  THere was writting on them.  See last message

Here is some info from a collectors Forum for you.

Some additional info for you, beyond Steve F.'s post simply saying "Eley Brothers London":
It is not my intention to "pop your bubble." However, I think we civil war relic diggers would want to know the full story behind any of the relics we dig. The Eley Brothers company did indeed manufacture cardboard-bodied, "pinfire-primer" brass-based shotgun cartridges during the civil war, some of which were imported and used in the American Civil War. However, pinfire shotgun-cartridge was still being made and available for purchase in the 1890s. They are listed in the 1897 Sears-&-Roebuck mail order catalog. The firm of Eley Brothers (London) continued to manufacture cartridges until 1907, when it became the Eley-Kynoch company. Unfortunately, there's no way to be sure a dug Eley pinfire shotgun-cartridge base is from the civil war or as much as 40 years later.

A book has been written about Eley Cartridges. I don't have the spare moeny to purchase it, but perhaps some folks here might want to.

Here's a photo of some non-dug Eley Brothers of London shotgun-cartridge bases.

Believe it or not, these things are making a comeback in some circles here in the US. There is actually a man in one of the western states that is making thes for people to load their own cartridges. I have found a FEW on old skirmish ground around here. They Were used to a limited extent in the Civil War.

Hi Xavier:
Thanks for the  "pin fire" sites.
I found 12 GA shotgun shell bases.  THe sites you suggested seem to be limited to MM cartridges as opposed to shells. As you might have expected I have found S O M E info on the shells
but I haven't seen a single one with the EXACT markings found on mine.  Curious!
