I thought I'd post this out of sheer curiousity.  Found this old shotgun shell head while hunting today.  It's a Peters 12Ga. HV.  Still has some of the paper or cardboard around the primer inside.  All I have is the head of the shell and since I know pretty much next to nothing about this sort of thing I thought maybe one of our members who is a little more in the know could tell me a little about it.  From what I've been able to tell so far the Peters company was in business from the 1880's to 1930's or 40's at which time it was bought by Remington.  That's if I understand it right. 

I am assuming in theory anyway that when the company was bought by Remington then the headstamp on the shells would have been switched to the Remington headstamps.  If I am correct with this line of logic then this shell dates before Remington purchased the company.  Right? 

Is there a way to get a better idea of approximately how old this item is? 

As I said...I don't really know much about this sort of thing.  Could be an interesting item...could be junk...maybe it's just me making a big "bang"...I haven't the slightest...

Hi SF,
       Your reserch is correct!! as far as your Hv Shells they were only produced from 1897 to 1907. So I would keep it most deffinately!! do You happen to have any color left around the shell base? it is a nice find indeed. wherever you found it, id take a second look around, since peters shells are collectable. I hope this helps,

Thanks for the quick reply.  Unfortunately there is no collar left around the base of the shell.  This is just the base with the primer and some of the paper left around the primer inside the base.  You can bet I'll be giving the area a closer look to see if I can't kick up something else.

Here's a pic of the other side of the base.  Sorry for the quality but it was kind of taken on the fly so to speak.

Hi SF,
     Your very welcome Smiley  Its a very nice find even for its condition! Is the primer still intact by anychance or has it fired am just curious lol ,
Id leave it intact as is and put it with your other collectables ( sent you a pm) and keep it out of direct sunlight so the paper dosnt degrade or discolor any further, and leave it in the condition that you found it. hope this helps. As Always Best Wishes,,,Rob

I believe this one was fired as it looks like a mark from the firing ping in the middle of the primer in the top photo I posted. 

Thanks very much for all the info you have provided.  It has been quite interesting and much appreciated.    I will be going back and giving this area a closer look and see what else could possibly turn up.

Hi SF and TH- Great find SF- There is one from that same time period to look out for and that is  Robin Hood brand- those are highly collectable- I have seen the empyt shell box fetch $1,300.00 +/- at auction.  Spent brass has gone $100.00 +/- USD. They were out of Vermont.Just FYI

Thanks for the "heads up" about the Robin Hood.  I'll be sure and keep a watch for them as you never know what will come out of the ground next with this great hobby.

I just came across this thread as I was looking for the same shell. I found a Peters 12 ga. 00 Buck shell my great grandfather had in a hunting vest he gave along with a Winchester Model 1897 12 ga. about 25 years ago.  The shell is still in tact, never been fired, blue cardboard casing.  I didn't know it was so old.
