That's my opinion also.

dr.dtector:
seems like there is always some factual basis in these type of old wives tales.seeing that the rumour started in a tavern, the version is probably some drunks stretching of the truth in one or all aspects of reality.

happy hunting ;D

Hi All,
Just a view, from across the Pond!
I checked out the story of the Beale Code/ Cypher, I even took the time to download and compare the Declaration of Independence, to the first part of the Code!!

Who-ever wrote this, cannot spell, as there are many differences between the Letters of the Declaration, which are numbered in the code and the words they are meant to portray in the first part of the code.
Also the words of the declaration amount to some 1700 in total, whereas the code has numbers which reach as high as 3007, each number is supposed to correspond to a letter from the Declaration.
I tried using a combination of the first letter for each word, the second letter, third etc.
I then tried to read the Declaration backwards and number it the same way.
I then added other parts to the Declaration to increase the number of words, by using the Bill of Rights.
None of these made the slightest difference, except that is, to make me more confused than when I started.
I think this code, is similar to the one that is supposed to be concealed within the Bible, this is possible, as a large number of words can be given a set of numbers and spaces and most will come up with passages/ sentences that make partial sense.
However, the bible story of a code can be refuted, as the bible was made up from a number of books and other sources, which were written at different times by different people.
As for the Beale code, someone at sometime took the time to number the words of the Declaration and then write a code which suited the first part of the Beale code.
As for the rest, it is just...................................confusing!!!!

Once again, this is just an opinion.
Best wishes crowsnest

PS.
There is another possible theory, which is based on unknown precedents!

Has the Declaration of Independence, been updated or changed from it's original state.?
Have the spelling of the Words within the Declaration, been changed over time.?
Has the spelling/ or words of the first part of the beale code been changed or tampered with?

Have the original tables showing the code been printed or reproduced in their exact form, or have they been altered or tampered with?

Just another thought!!
Best wishes crowsnest

Goldfinger:
There is only one Declaration of Independance and it's been unchanged in over 200 years. I kind of worked on this cipher myself many years ago and concluded it was a hoax just to make money from the pamphlet that contained the codes.

Just like the DOI- The Beale cipher remains unchanged to date. A few noted cryptologists have worked on this problem with some very powerful computers and concluded it was unsolvable- hence a hoax.

Crowsnest- Here's a couple websites at the opposite ends of the spectrum. The first shows how one person actually solved the cipher.
The second explains his logic as to why the Beale Cipher is a hoax.
